My current sources of inspiration include the botanical photographs of Karl Blossfeldt and Aesop’s fables. I am also drawn to “stump-work” embroidery, a very dimensional type of embroidery noted by raised figures and miscellaneous mixed-media elements. Often these compositions involve one or two central figures surrounded by lush, fantastical foliage and animals. These simple narratives of a protagonist in an exotic environment can be interpreted as stories of paradise, temptation, or even danger. I am interested in exploring the tension between a state of desire and the possibility of fulfillment, the transition from deprived to satisfied, and levels of vulnerability to temptation.
